Neither Inflation Nor Labor Will Budge

Inflation remains the topic of the day. The December consumer price index (CPI) headline rose 0.4% month over month as expected, putting the year-over-year rate at 2.9%, also as expected. The core rate, which strips out volatile food and energy prices rose 0.2% month over month, a shade lighter than expectations of 0.3%. And the year-over-year core rate is now running at 3.2%, also 0.1% lighter than expectations.
